Starting his career with a classic villain role, he has now become an outstanding actor of Malayalam Cinema in Kerala. Without no doubt, Mohan Lal is today's one of the best actors India has ever produced. He is also rated one of the most talented actors in India. His ranges of movies are enviable, his comedy roles are incomparable and his unique style of dialogue delivery is effortless. Not many actors can portray both comedy and serious roles with the same ease. And with all these rare talents he has received “Padmashri”, one of the nations highest civilian honors. Mohanlal is the greatest actor India has ever produced. This is according to directors ranging from Shaji N. Karun, Mani Rathnam, and Priyadarshan, to Ram Gopal Varma. Lal's rise to fame began with roles as villains, until the late eighties when he was introduced to India as a leading man by the director Fazil. Lal went on to become Kerala cinema's most reknowned and popular actor, sharing the spotlight only with his contemporary, Mammooty. Popularity aside, he has shaped an impressive career with a body of work that can be the envy of any actor. His work with Sibi Malayil in Kireedam gave him a special mention in the National Awards of India, and he later won the Best Actor prize for his work in Malayil's Bharatham. Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair (born May 21, 1960), simply known by the stage name Mohanlal, is an Indian actor of mainly Malayalam movies. He is a popular film actor in the state of Kerala and has had striking successes in both mainstream and parallel cinema. He along with Mammooty are the superstars of Malayalam cinema. Also recognised among the most versatile actors in India, he is a Padmashree awardee.

Career

While in college, he teamed up with his friends to establish a company called Bharath Cine Group and began shooting his first film titled Thiranottam, in which he played the role of a mentally retarded servant.The movie was directed by his close friend Priyadarshan.They were college mates in Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram. But the film ran into trouble with the Censor Board and was never released.

His first major breakthrough came in the film Manjil Virinja Pookal (1980), in which he played a villain. The film was a major hit, and Mohanlal followed it up with more roles as a villain, most notably in Uyarangalil.

In the meantime, he ventured into comedies as well, playing a role in his director-friend Priyadarshan's debut, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, now a cult screwball classic. He was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai.

Criticism

Although largely unnoticed outside Kerala, Malayalam film critics and enthusiasts regard his work in the 80s and 90s to be among the very best in cinema. At its peak, his art was noted for its versatility, understated intensity, emotional depth, comedic timing, and the ability to portray characters that embodied the Malayali ethos. He has portrayed the entire gamut of human emotions and the a wide range of characters. Mohanlal is often considered to be one of the most natural actors in India. Preferring the art of restraint, probably the most under appreciated quality in Indian cinema, he tries hard his to be just another character onscreen.

His best work spans a wide range. They include:

Productions

Mohanlal has also produced films under his Pranavam Arts banner (Pranav is his son's name). Some films produced by Mohanlal: His Highness Abdullah, Bharatham, Kala Pani, Vaanaprastham. Producer Antony Perumbaavoor (originally Mohanlal's chauffeur) is a trusted aide of Mohanlal and most of Mohanlal's current movies are produced by him.

He also acted in Iruvar in Tamil, directed by famous director Mani Ratnam and Company (in Hindi) directed by Ram Gopal Varma.

T.S.Sureshbabu is coming back to filmdom after a long time with a movie starring Mohanlal. The film titled Karthika Thirunal Karthikeyan will tell a humorous story written by Mahesh Mithra. This movie produced by Valiyaveetil International will start only by the next year. Valiyaveetil international and T.S. Sureshbabu is also planning another movie with Mammootty which will start only after the Mohanlal movie.

Sureshbabu has been a hit maker in the early nineties with films like Kottayam Kunjachan and Hitler Brothers. The director has been busy for the last few years with the production of super hit mega serials like Kadamattathu Kathanar and Vikramadithyan which ran for hundreds of episodes in the various channels.
