Nayantara, the Diwali queen
October 12, 2006
The beautiful Nayantara from Kerala is the flavour of this Diwali with three of her films releasing next week -- Vallavan with Silambarasan, E with Jeeva and Thalaimagan with Sarath Kumar. The hot actress is glamour personified these days, but looking back at her early films, we find her looking considerably different before her makeover.

A flashback tells us that Nayantara did not exactly arrive on the movie scene with a bang. Of course, her first film Manassinakkare directed by Satyan Anthikad was a huge, huge hit, but this had little to do with the heroine. The film had a good story, and the hype was not about the young heroine but the return of veteran Sheela -- the heroine of Ramu Kariat's National award wining cult success, Chemmeen (1965). The classic heroine hogged all the limelight, while Nayantara looked simple. After a couple of films with Malayalam superstars, she got the offer to act in a Tamil film, Ayya opposite Sarath Kumar.

Tt was then that her fortunes turned. Director P Vasu, who was remaking Manichitrathazhu in Tamil as Chandramukhi, was looking for a heroine for megastar Rajnikanth. Vasu's wife had seen Manassinakkare and recommended Nayantara. As soon as she was announced as Rajni's heroine, her life changed. She was no longer an upcoming star; she had arrived. It was a giant leap for the young heroine.

Her work as the megastar's leading lady made her so popular that Rajni fans began to throng her parents' house in Thiruvalla to see their Anni (elder brother's wife). She even danced with Vijay film in a song where the lyrics declared her status, beginning with Naan Super Starin heroine (I'm the Super Star's heroine)

Her friendship with young Silambarasan, which began with their film Vallavan, transformed the plump girl with a considerable midriff into a glamorous heroine. Though none of her roles so far have required any histrionic skills, she is in an enviable position. Both Tamil and Telugu cinema producers and directors are queueing up after her, and she's rejecting more films than she is accepting.

And the eyes more bright
And the lips more scarlet,
Or ask if all be right
