|
|
Johny Antony's effects adventure ‘Ee Pattanathil Bhootham’ starts off 'sweetly' enough with some awesome shot and graded shots; But once you realise that this is much more a kids' film that isn't even trying to be anything else, the unspectacular first half is the only thing that works for seniors. And for those who holds a likable interest right till the end of the first two hours, the movie then abruptly and unapologetically turns into the kind of fairy tale story, meant exclusively for those below their tens. But the encouraging thing is that though the farce screenplay is very predictable and could have used more imaginative situations, the film has enough colour, humour, and drama to make it appealing to children folk, who seems to have a dearth in their genre of movies in Malayalam.
As expected the movie has a good hearted genie, who is trapped by a wicked magician (Pitamagan Mahadevan) who uses him to make money through criminal ways. Accidentally rescued by a group of estranged kids trapped and held hostage in a circus troupe, the genie takes the form of their Jimmy Uncle (Mammootty). And to appease them, he adds a ''gottie'' on his chin, dress himself in branded shoes and attires and takes a childish voice. Meanwhile, Jimmy, his prototype, a multi-talented daring circus artist, is in jail for a murder of the troupe owner Philippose, the incident with which he hardly have any connection.
The daughter of Philppose, Ancy (Kavya Madhavan ), who comes back to inherit her paternal property hates Jimmy and the children who are supporting him. The “Bhootham” with alien powers are Jimmy, and his shildren's final chance to escape from the troubles they are presently in. How the friendly ''Kutty Chatthan'' manages to clear off himself and the children from their enemies and menaces, are the threads for the unlimited fun that follows.
If you walk in expecting gritty drama or complex characters then perhaps this is not the movie for you. In this screenplay of convenience, many sequences have their share of hiccups, not logical even to child viewers. But with plenty of one-liners and comic acts, it end's up as Mammootty's show all the way, which is sure to go down well with children. He is at ease playing the twin roles, though his new found voice for the “Bhootham” doesn't appeal much. Suraj Venjaaramoodu as his trusted aide and Salimkumar as a dumb cop provides the needed laughter all through. Mahadevan as the “manthravadi” is also good .
The film which is in fact, the final movie of Kavya Madhavan before her marriage, doesn't offer anything memorable for the actress. Left with out a love track and the mandatory duet song, she is absolutely out of place with no other mission than to look beautiful.
Utpal CV Nayanar 's beautiful cinematography, Manu Jagath's art direction and debutante Shan Rahman's music and background scores are the other high points of the movie. The EFX team has also created some mind-blowing effects, the best seen in Mollywood till now.
On the whole, ‘Ee Pattanathil Bhootham’ has something for the fans of children's movies, but little for those who don't like to go back to their days of innocence. And if you can't make a return trip, just skip this. But prescribe this for your little ones who may love it and cheer for its ''replication'' of same old tricks and situations that they read regularly in children's magazines.

Oru reviewil ninnum adarthiyeduthathaa...
Malayala cinemayude peru ivanmaarellam chernnu nashippikum urappaa..(not reviewer)
There are the horns for sure, and the stoop of servitude, but never really the mischief or the delightful impishness that so much surrounds the elves that we have always known. And the voice doesn't help either. It sounds like being caught somewhere between the throat and the tongue and then hastily making an exit through the nose.
Oh, and there has been so much talk about the graphics and all that stuff, that would make this comic caper an out of this world experience. But frankly, nothing of the sort ever happens. Yeah, the graphics are good, and perhaps better than any other film in Malayalam till now. But that doesn't really suggest that there is anything to look forward to here. It's neat, but it's way too commonplace.
Johnny's genie could have created a splutter, had it got away a good ten years back. As of now, the poor thing looks incompetent to strike up a rapport with either adults who grew up reading great kid's fiction or a fresh, young, bright-eyed generation that has already seen it all.

'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham' tells about what happens when a genie, trapped in a bottle by a sorcerer, is set free by a group of kids (who have for company some grown-ups who too behave rather like kids!). The genie tells them that he is bound to obey their every command and would take any shape they desire him to take.
The group belongs to a circus. They are treated very cruelly for being allegedly involved in the murder of Philippose (Janardhanan), the circus owner. They ask the genie to take the shape of Jimmy (Mammootty), who is now in jail after being falsely implicated in the murder and sentenced to life. The genie takes the form of Jimmy, but remains invisible except to the kids and Krishnan (Innocent) and Sisupalan (Suraaj Venjaramoodu).
In the meantime Ancy (Kavya Madhavan), Philippose's daughter, takes charge of things. The circus MD Robin (Suresh Krishna) and PRO Ramanathan (Sphadikom George) convince her that Jimmy was indeed the one who murdered her father, and that Krishnan, Sisupalan and the kids too were involved. The persecution continues. The genie then steps in and the story takes off from there.
There's nothing wrong with the story. But had the focus been on making it into a fantasy film, it probably would have worked out better. The way it is, the film is average stuff, with nothing much to be said either about the acting or about the technical aspects. The songs too are unimpressive. Mammootty is neither bad nor good. The director and the script writer should have worked more on the characters and on incidents, because that's what adds meat to a film like this.
The comedy aspect too doesn't work out well; Suraaj and co don't impress much. Kavya's presence is rarely felt. The only bit of impressive acting comes from Thilakan who does a cameo role in the opening reel, reminding one of Kottarakara Sreedharan Nair in 'My Dear Kuttichathan'.
For those who have seen good fantasy films, 'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham' won't come up to scratch. The film is not likely to impress Mammootty fans either. As a matter of fact, it won't make a dent even as a children's movie. Kids now have much better stuff to watch. 'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham' looks like a kids' movie made in the 1980's or early 1990's, and that won't fetch much in today's market.
