The big expectations and curiosity generated by the unique promos and teasers of the film Chellamay is substantiated ? hats off to the brilliant work of director AR.Gandhikrishna and the entire Chellamay team.
Vishwa (Bharath) and Mythili (Reema Sen) are neighbors since childhood. Mythili is affectionate and caring to Vishwa who lost his mother when he was six month old baby. She is very protective about him and treats Vishwa like her younger brother. Rajashekhar (Girish Karnad), a rich business magnet, is Vishwa's father. Raghunandhan (Vishal), a young income tax officer, raids Rajshekar's house and by sheer accident finds out that he has hidden all the unaccounted wealth in Mythili's house. In a subsequent raid at Mythili's house he meets Mythili there. They eventually fall in love after a series of incidents, get married and settle in Goa. Now Vishwa in the adolescent stage gets shattered with unknown feelings and tries things differently.
Obsessed by Mythili, Vishwa comes to Goa under the pretext of studies and stays next-door to Mythili. Vishwa becomes jealous of Raghu and their happy married life as he becomes more and more fanatical with Mythili. He devises a crooked plan and kidnaps Mythili when Raghu goes out of station on work. Vishwa takes her to Chennai to their farm house and locks her inside.
Raghu comes back to Goa to find Mythili missing. Their neighbour tells him that Mythili eloped with Vishwa. A chance watch of their wedding video, Raghu gets a hint on Bharath's behaviour towards him and understands that Mythili is kidnapped. Raghu with the help of Harichandran (Vivek) his colleague tracks Vishwa's hideout.
A totally shocked Mythili pleads Vishwa to release her and makes it clear that she cannot be his wife. That she loves him as her son and a younger brother. In a thrilling climax on high seas the trio fights it out and Mythili hits Vishwa with the boat oar. He falls into the sea taking Mythili with him. Raghu comes for her rescue and Vishwa's dead body resurfaces on the shores.
Reema Sen steals the show by her mind-blowing performance. The whole film revolves around her and she has given an extraordinary portrayal. Be it oomph, romantic scenes or the final break down Reema excels. Vishal, the debutant tall dark hero, has given a neat performance. He fits the role like a T. One more promising hero for the Tamil industry. Bharath as an obsessed boy who can't differentiate between love and affection is convincing. Vivek is in his usual self brings the roof down especially with the comedy scene with actress Mumtaz. Bhanupriya comes in a folk song. Gandhikrishna's direction and screenplay is fast paced and needs special mention. There is never a lag moment in the film. Cinematography and music play important roles for the technical excellence of the film. K.V.Anand's camera is sparkling especially on the Andaman beaches for the song "Sonali" is exotic. Harris Jayaraj's songs which are already chart-busters are the major asset to the movie. Sujatha's dialogues are natural and apt. Overall a feel good film from G.J.Cinemas.

Verdict:Must See

It is very difficult nowadays, to satisfy box-office demands and yet produce a decent film. A.R.Gandhi Krishna’s Chellamay lives up to its hot promos and Reema Sen steals the show with an impressive performance.

Mythili (Reema Sen) is very affectionate from her childhood towards Viswa, (Bharath) her neighbour, and the only son of a very rich businessman Rajasekhar (Girish Karnad), who had lost his wife when the child was six months old. She is very protective about him and treats Viswa like her younger brother, as the little boy grows up under her eyes.

Raghunandan (Vishal) is a very smart Income Tax officer who comes to Rajasekhar’s place and finds his ill-gotten wealth hidden by Viswa in Mythili’s house! But soon Raghu falls in love with her and after a series of incidents they get married and settle down in Goa. Trouble starts as Viswa is shattered after Mythili’s wedding, and he comes to Goa and stays near her house.

Slowly, Viswa becomes jealous of Raghu and their happy life as he becomes more and more obsessed with Mythili. One day he hatches a plan, kidnaps Mythili and keeps her in a beach house near Mahabalipuram. He becomes a maniac and his only enemy is Raghu whom he considers as an obstacle in his quest for a peaceful life with Mythili. As to Why Viswa is obsessed with Mythili, is told in the climax of the film shot in the high seas.

Reema Sen is a sure winner. Be it her glamourous skin-show, her love scenes or her final break-down on the beach, she steals the scenes. Sen does a fine job of portraying both her strength and her underlying vulnerability. “Boys” fame Bharath as Viswa is enticing and has done his part convincingly by bringing out the innocence of a 17-year-old along with his hidden angst as a neglected child.

Newcomer Vishal is tall and does the regular superhero stuff. Vivek takes on the income tax department which brings down the house, especially the scene where he interrogates actress Mumtaz and asks her about her “movable and immovable properties”!!! Girish Karnad is wasted in an insipid role.

Technically Chellamay is picture perfect as K.V.Anand’s lighting and camera are simply superb. The song “En Sonali…” picturised on silver sands of Andaman Islands is breath taking. Harris Jayaraj's music makes a perfect package for the film, with the “Vellaikkara….”, sung by Mahathi being the pick of the album. The veteran V.T.Vijayan has now started fast-cut editing, the order of the day.

The story and screenplay of Gandhi Krishna is somewhat in the manner of Yash Chopra’s Darr and so many other obsessive love stories. Still he has come out with a racy film that is sure to satisfy the youth audience and has been packaged strictly to suit their tastes.

Verdict: Cracker of a Movie!
