K.S.Chitra, the leading multilingual playback singer has been awarded the prestigious Padma Sri. It is another feather on the cap of the incredible singing machine who has sung over 15,000 songs in seven languages! Chitra heard about the news when she was in Hyderabad to attend a live concert.

What was your first reaction on hearing the big news?
There was buzz that I might get a Padma Sri award but when I first heard it, I was shocked (Laughs loudly).

How did you hear the news?
I was on my way to Hyderbad for a live concert. Before boarding the flight from Chennai, I called up home to find out how things were. My manager told me that there was call from a Government official from New Delhi asking me to call back. I immediately called back and that person wanted to officially convey the news to me.

How did it feel?
To have the �Padma Sri� title before your name is indeed a great honour. I am extremely happy and grateful to everyone, but when I deeply think about it I have my doubts if I am really worthy of it? (smiles). I am not being modest but� I never expected this.

You must be on top of the world?
I am happy when people around are also happy. It was the Tamilnadu government who recommended my name first followed by Kerala government. Even two years back my name was recommended by an organization.

How are you going to celebrate this happy moment?
As I landed in the Hyderabad airport, the Corporation gave me a beautiful painting as gift. Ever since wishes, gifts, bouquets have not stopped coming and my phone has not stopped ringing. Ministers from Kerala, L.Subramaniam, Hariharan, Jesudas, Sujatha, Unnikrishnan, Jerry Amaldev, M.G.Sreekumar. MSV are among my close associates who called up to congratulate me.

Anyone whom you would like to remember at this moment?
A lot of people. I am never after any awards but all what I have today came to me due to my hard work, dedication, passion and above all God�s grace. I don�t want to be too happy about anything (gives one of her trademark smiles)
