Review -Kochi Rajavu

By sify

Wanted desperately- A story! Just wondering what writer-director Johhny Antony was thinking while writing the story of Kochi Rajavu? Did he ever think that our Dileep could pass off as a Rajnikanth of Malayalam? Alas the film ends up as a pale imitation of Baasha, the mass masala entertainer.
Our heart goes out to poor Dileep after watching Kochi Rajavu, as an actor and distributor. There is nothing wrong in being inspired from movies of other languages, but the idea has to be nourished and executed carefully if it has to click with the Kerala audience. And what happened to Dileep who was always considered to be a man with great capacity to choose scripts as he himself was an assistant director?

Surayanarayana Varma (Dileep) is a member of the royal family of Kochi. His father (Murali) is an officer in the Home ministry and Surya is a student leader in Law College. He gets involved in a violent agitation that results in the buses of Karimparakkal family getting damaged. Surya is in love with Aswathy (Kavya) a member of the same family which results in some misunderstandings. Meanwhile Surya’s father threatens and throws him out of the house and he becomes an auto driver!

On the day he plans to elope with Aswathy, Surya accidentally kills one of her relative (Irshad) and lands up in jail. After he comes out he resumes his education in Chennai Law College, where he meets Meenakshi (Rambha) daughter of political kingmaker Parthasarathy (Vijayan). When his marriage with Meenakshi is fixed, Surya comes to know that Aswathy is still waiting for him and hence he comes back to Kochi. But by the time the nasty politician joins hands with Karimparakkal family baying for Surya’s blood!

It is one of Dileep’s worst films in recent times. The story is illogical and the presentation is idiotic. Johnny Antony thinks that the audience will accept Dileep as an action hero, ends up with egg on his face. Some of the old comedy tracks of CID Moosa is rehashed to make it a Kichadi.

Vidyasagar’s music is a major disappointment as there is not even one hummable song. However Dileep shines in comedy scenes, a department in which he is unbeatable. Harisri Asokan hams throughout and is a pain to watch. Jagathy is stiff, Kavya and Rambha sleep walks. On a whole, an avoidable film.

Verdict: Bore
