PostPosted: Sat Jun 11, 2005 10:15 pm    Post subject: Daivanaamathil-Pritvi's mind blowing performance (review)

Very rarely does one come across a delicate subject treated with maturity. Jayaraj who has won critical acclaim and national award for best direction surprises you with rank commercial films like 4 the people. Now in Daivanamathil he springs yet another surprise. Daivanamathil is the title of the book written by Sahib, a true secularist, who distances himself from his grandson Anwar (played by Prithviraj) who takes up the extremist path. Anwar's transition into a 'jehadi' takes place after an encounter in a train with 'Karsevaks' headed to demolish the Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh.

'I can no longer find a place for a romantic husband in me after seeing what is happening to my community. My sole aim now is jehad and I do not think a post-graduate degree to serve the fascists will carry any purpose,' he writes to his wife, from whom he had parted for higher studies after a brief honeymoon.

Sahib is grieved to hear Anwar was behind the planting of a bomb in a hotel that opened in the holy month of Ramzan. Anwar convinces himself that as the community has a powerful enemy, revenge can be cruel. He believes innocents getting killed should not divert the true jehadi from his path.

'Islam never encourages extremism. Even agonizing cries of Muslims are being treated as extremism and the handiwork of a small minority among us makes the world look at them as the world's extremists,' he tells his grandson.

Samira, the girl who tries to change her husband ends up in jail for his extremist activities. She wants her old Anwar back from the prison of his newfound beliefs. This film is probably the best film in Prithviraj's career and he bowls you over with his mind blowing intense performance. Bhawana too matches up to Prithiviraj.

Liberty Mammootty, a businessman in real life who plays Prithiviraj's grandfather in the film fits the bill as Sahib the lone voice of secularism. Music is by Kaithpraman Vishwanathan is haunting and editing by national award winner Beena Paul is excellent. The music score, by Praveen Mani, follows traditional Pakistani and Iranian styles.

The director has lavishly portrayed the colourful celebrations which are part of Muslim marriages as they provide an effective contrast to the changes in Anwar's life. By looking at a sensitive subject through the eyes of a Muslim girl married to a man who has taken to fundamentalism and extremism, the director has been able to steer clear of controversies and still he is able to tell a few home truths. Sunny's camerawork sets the mood of the film.

this story sounds good and from the stills looks like prithvi and bhavana have really excelled. if they both really did as well as it looks like (which i guess we'll know once the film is out) somehow i would expect that from prithvi.. i think he's really talented (elaarkum aa abhiprayam illa ennu enchu ariyaam ennaalum..). but bhavana, wow! in my mind she would have exceeded expectations. i've always pictured her as an ordinary actress. anyway i really hope this film turns out to be really good!
