Unlike the Tamil or Telugu variety, Malayalam actresses are not exactly 'hot'. In fact, most of them are overweight! But it appears Malayalam filmmakers and audience prefer that way.
The funniest thing is, the most glamorous girls migrate to Tamil and Telugu cinema, like Asin, Nayanthara, Gopika and now, Renuka Menon.

Kavya Madhavan

At 21, this attractive girl started her career as a child artiste, in films like Mammootty's Azhagiya Ravanan. Nowadays, she is mostly paired opposite comedy king Dileep. Kavya faced severe flak by declaring she would not act opposite older men like Mammootty and Mohanlal, but she later withdrew the statement.

She may not be as talented as Meera Jasmine (in Perumazhakalam, Meera towered over her) but she is the top-billed actress in Malayalam now.

Navya Nair
Also 21, Navya Nair debuted opposite Dileep in the hit, Ishtam.

But it was the blockbuster Nandanam, opposite Prithviraj, which established her in the industry.

Navya walked away with all the awards including the state award. But she was also criticised for imitating Manju Warrier.

The films that followed, featuring Prithviraj and Navya Nair, sank at the box office. But nobody disputed her talent.

She is one of the few Malayalee actresses who have a filmi background -- her uncle, filmmaker K Madhu made the Sethurama Iyer series with Mammootty.

Navya's first Tamil film, Azhagiya Theeye, did good business, and she is regarded as a talented actress in Tamil cinema as well.

Meera Jasmine
One of the most talented young actresses around, Meera Jasmine was almost hounded out of Kerala by the yellow press. But the National Award for T V Chandran's Paatham Onnu Oru Vilapam changed that.

She was recently in the news for the wrong reasons -- she claimed her family had cheated her and left her penniless. They claimed that her guru, director Lohitadas, had instigated her to fight against them.

Lohitadas is now making the Tamil remake of his hit film, Kasturiman, with Meera in the lead.

Meera's recent release was Perumazhakalam, where she excelled as a Muslim woman whose husband was waiting for the hangman's noose.

Bhavana
The youngest of the lot, Bhavana was never considered a serious actress. Her reputation was of a 'doll', who could play a sister or a student.

In her debut film Nammal, a huge box office success, her face was darkened to make her look like a ragpicker. She excelled in the role.

Her next major release, Swapnakoodu, was also a huge hit. She played Meera Jasmine's younger sister, a school girl.

Bhavana arrived as an actress, with a very mature performance in Jayaraj's Daivanaamathil. She played the young wife of Prithviraj, trying hard to bring her husband back from the path of terrorism.

Nayanthara
In her debut film, Manassinakare, opposite seasoned actor Jayaram, Nayanthara held her own. Her next film was opposite Mohanlal. The 21 year old was criticised for appearing opposite senior stars but she declared she learnt a lot from the veterans.

For the first time, her acting talent was appreciated -- in her new release, Raapakal, opposite Mammootty, she played a servant girl, sans makeup.

She also played Rajnikanth's heroine in Chandramukhi.
