Dec. 10 (Bloomberg) -- India’s federal government has agreed to demands for a new state to be carved out from the southern province of Andhra Pradesh, Press Trust of India reported, citing Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram.

The decision to create Telangana was taken late last night at a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and government officials in New Delhi, the agency reported. The process will be initiated in the state assembly, according to Chidambaram, who didn’t give a timeline, Press Trust said.

K. Chandrashekhar Rao, leader of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi political party that is demanding a separate state, ended his hunger protest in the state capital Hyderabad shortly after the government’s assurance. Supporters of the movement attacked buses and government vehicles this week, prompting local authorities to use force to quell protests.

India has 28 states and seven union territories administered by the central government.
