They both have different styles. Mammooty has always acted in sophisticated roles and more family oriented, challenging roles. And Mohanlal till recently acted in very funny, classic roles. Who can forget him in Minnaram, Bharatham, His Highness Abdulla. However recently mohanlal became bogged with "narasimham" roles. And Mammooty took this opportunity to turn out blockbusters like Chronic Bachelor and Pattalam. I mean lal is doing better now but considering the current state, I give a shoutout to Mammooty

Since u admitted both super stars did gud on early nineties and eighties im not talking anything abt old movies. these are sum late ninety ( lets start frm 1995) movies which were either block busters, or a trend, or a proud for malayalam cinema which lalettan did.
1995- lalettans Sphadikam marks the emergence of a new Mohanlal -- the omnipotent, moustache twirling, tough, anti-hero with a heart of gold.
1997- For the first time, lalettan acts in a language other than Malayalam. It takes a lot of persuasion from Mani Ratnam to make him agree to do Iruvar. Though iruvar did not do as expected in Box office, critics said lalettans actin was superb.
1999- lalettan as Paremeshwaran in Ustad was released. though it was not a classic movie, it was a super hit which gave the producer his money back.
2000- Shaji N Karun's Vaanaprastham is the highest point in his career. As its producer, he loses a lot of money, but wins both the National and State Awards for Best Actor. If it is a commercial disaster, lalettan's Narasimham is one of the biggest successes in Malayalam cinema.
2002-He acted in Company, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The role wins him the Best Supporting Actor Award at the International Indian Film Academy Awards.
2003-Mohanlal completes 25 years as a film actor on September 4. His Onam release, Balettan, opens with a bang at the box office.
2004- Pulikaatil charlie is going to be released which da fans are expectin a mega hit .lalettan absolutely is a crowd puller.
I admit that there were also some other poor movies like harikrishnans( mega hit), olympian antony adam, HHHA, Thandavam, Onnaman, praja etc.. but an actor sometimes have to compromise.

malluz your absolutely right. mohanlal has more memorable roles and scenes. some movies are just unforgettable. i mean the phrase "monay thinessha" is still around and i know several people that have memorized parts of the script of movies such as narasimham and spadikam. although it's not right to compare two artists of any kind, i would have to say that i think lalettan's movies tend to click with me more. but one thing i have to say though is that my three favorite movies of all time is the CBI trilogy and now they're making a fourth so...... that's something to look forward to. i think sethuramIyer CBI is the best role/ character ever created by the malayalam cinema. only comparison would have to be the funny yet agressive role of the father in the movie godfather. does anyone know the name of the person who played that role? i know he passed away some time ago. but as for my input on this discussion i say Lalettan is more entertaining for me to watch.
